In family law matters, early identification of risk is essential to achieving safe and fair outcomes. That’s why the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia introduced the Lighthouse Project—an innovative, trauma-informed approach to risk screening that can significantly impact how your case is managed.
What is Lighthouse Risk Screening?
The Lighthouse screening process is designed to:
- Identify risks such as family violence, mental health challenges, substance misuse, or child abuse early in the case.
- Use this information to direct matters to the most appropriate court pathway.
- Ensure the safety of all parties through tailored support and management.
At its heart, Lighthouse is about ensuring that the right resources are applied at the right time, for the right families.
How Does the Process Work?
When you file for parenting orders (or parenting and financial orders) in participating registries—including Parramatta, Sydney, Newcastle, and others—you’ll be asked to complete a confidential Family DOORS Triage questionnaire online.
- It takes just 10–15 minutes to complete.
- It’s entirely voluntary.
- Your answers are confidential and not admissible in court.
Once submitted, your questionnaire is reviewed by a specialist Lighthouse Team. If serious concerns are identified, a Triage Counsellor may contact you for a follow-up phone appointment to assess the situation further, help develop a safety and wellbeing plan, and suggest referrals to support services.
What Happens After Risk Screening?
Depending on your case’s risk level, the Court may:
- Allocate your case to the Evatt List (for high-risk matters).
- Provide safety planning and referrals.
- Manage your matter under general court practice directions for lower-risk cases.
Cases identified as high risk receive priority attention, more intensive case management, and—where appropriate—access to child experts, external service providers, and judicial officers with specific training in family violence and trauma.
Why Participate in Lighthouse Screening?
While optional, completing the Lighthouse risk screening can be crucial. It gives the Court a clearer picture of what’s going on behind the legal paperwork—ensuring your matter receives the oversight and protections it may urgently need.
At Montgomery Legal, we encourage our clients to participate in Lighthouse screening where eligible. It can make a significant difference in how your matter proceeds and may help ensure a safer and more supported path through the family law system.
